Should we embrace a new definition of ethics for the latest generation? Aside from the lying, cheating, stealing, and plagiarism, 77% of todays youth think they're a pretty decent bunch! picked by BrownTrout 1 year ago

"The competition is greater, the pressures on kids have increased dramatically," said Mel Riddle of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. "They have opportunities their predecessors didn't have (to cheat). The temptation is greater."
While I agree with the latter, the former makes no sense. If you're not doing the work for yourself you're not in the competition, you're just riding coattails. If you obtain success that way the pressure should naturally decrease (on the curve); i.e. the work to obtain success should be getting easier because you'd be far ahead of those who cheated.

Seriously? the pressures on kids? What pressure is on kids today that I missed out on? or that anyone in the last 100 years has missed out on.

You clearly don't hang out with enough kids. They don't have adult problems, but their problems are still pretty stressful. There is more pressure on kids (from parents) to succeed now.

Well I fit the definition of "kid" (17) and my life is considered more stressful than some adults, I hate to put this sap story up but... My father booted me out of the house when I was 15, been employed since then, it is imperative to hold down a job, I have no health insurance, so if I get sick, tough, I gotta stay in school while paying my way (I am in college, but still a kid), my work alone causes people to break down, I need to worry about paying for college and hoping to get some lifesaving scholarship and ensuring I keep the people sponsoring me happy so I don't end up with my ass in the gutter. Things would be much easier if I said "Screw ethics" and went about my business. Well that is a summary of my sap story, and there are MUCH worse ones out there.

i just think morals are going out of style.
i don't think it has as much to do with pressure as they're making it seem. its becoming more socially acceptable to be "bad".
i don't know, i wasn't a kid so long ago and i know i did those things because i wanted to have the easy way out.
it was way easier to write answers on my desk for a test that studying my butt off like i should have. and most of your peers will say tell you good job or something.
society has just become so lax with morals in general. i think when so many different ethical backgrounds and religious backgrounds are all coming together, some moral lines are going to get blurred. and when you have so much freedom to do what you please and believe what you believe there isn't anyone to hold kids accountable.
...end rant

On surveys similar to this, many people I know either answer randomly or put "yes" for everything just for the heck of it/because they are a bunch of goof-offs who are too lazy to really take the survey.

So I personally don't buy this survey's results too much.

I think that there has always been pressure on kids to succeed. I even remember a time when only the winning teams in local kid sports would get trophies. In some countries they will kill the babies just for not being boys, talk about pressure.

I know plenty of kids and I passed through that age myself in a rather unpleasant manner. I am aware that they have different issues to deal with than adults. My point is that throughout time all children have been pressured quite extensively. I would suggest that this current generation has a sense of entitlement and feels bitter disappointment when they realization that they may have to work to get what they want.

No wonder I didn't get into my first choice for a college- I wasn't cheating!

In the realm of academic pressure, I'd say it's getting more and more competitive for kids right now. Life pressures have been and will always be there, but pressure relating to "getting into a good school" is higher than it used to be.

Especially since more and more bosses are expecting degrees now. Before it wasn't as big of a deal, a highschool was a highschool, and college wasn't for many americans...
