Wow, it's been a while since I've heard of this!
In South Africa when I was a kid we used to "celebrate" Guy Fawkes with fireworks and stuff. It was the only night other than New Year's when people would light fireworks and stuff, but I haven't heard this since I moved away from there 14 years ago...

Here in the UK it has more and more become known as either Bonfire Night or simply Fireworks Night.
Very few people have bonfires no as local authorities tend to tear them down.
