Ratings stunt? Local TV airs videos of breast exams
WJLA officials said the segments are providing an important service because many women don't know how to properly check their breasts.

During the next sweeps period, they'll air videos of men masturbating - because that's been shown to reduce the likelihood of prostate cancer. picked by cecilberman 4 weeks ago

Some people are just prudes.

Which is worse: Showing (or seeing) an exposed breast or dying from cancer?

Was it because of sweeps? I'm sure it was...but it still is important to get the word out.

I totally agree.

It's a shame they chose not to report about the controversy on performing those self-exams though, as I'm all for informed descisions.

If they wanted to do it with little controversy they could just use a fake breast.

The controversy is on how helpful self exams are, docs don't agree, and it's not a good thing to not at least mention this in the progam.

If there's a controversy about seeing a naked boob, then people really need to grow up.
I see two of them every day, and I'm not blind yet.
Use of fake breasts is just not the same thing. The position of the hands would be different than when you do it yourself...and strapping a fake breast in front of a woman would just be weird.

If it is America, the biggest controversy is the naked boob.

I'm always puzzled by parents who will let their kids see the most violent movies but freak out at the thought that the kids may see a little nudity.

Not sure why some of you are acting like culturally one of our taboos has not been exposed breasts. I would venture that most women are perfectly glad to keep their own boobs covered. Why are any of you wanting to push this agenda? Why do you want boobs exposed on TV, but are not comfortable with the idea of exposing your own?

Keep em' covered I say!

Really you need an outside party checking for lumps if you want to be safe. That's why I offer free, very thorough breast exams.

I also wouldn't want to cry in front of people outside of my own trust circle, that doesn't mean I have a problem with other people doing it on tv.

Exposing your physical or emotional self isn't something everyone wants to do to strangers. That doesn't mean we want to knock those who are ok with it.

Comparing crying with exposed your own boobs? Sorry, I doubt you actually put these things in the same category. Do you just like the idea of being avant garde? Do you honestly think that showing your boobs and crying are parallel acts? If you had to choose between being caught in a picture crying or with your boobs completely exposed that these are equally embarrassing? Why are you for this? Just look at some of the comments from the guys here. They want to see your boobs. Joke about "examining" them for you. You don't think that most guys won't sexualize practically any bare boobs they see? Or, we could simply push the boundaries enough that eventually seeing boobs, or exposing your boobs, no longer represents anything erotic or exciting. Christmas everyday just would not be special.

I think if guys get something out of it, then they'll be happy. But I really don't care, it isn't as tho we are trying to keep guys from looking at boobs.[/quote]I think it is a valid comparison. I would much rather do a video of that (non-sexual nudity) than cry (authentically) on tv.

Different things bother different people. Why should I care if a guy gets a rise out of it? I get a rise out of certain bare chested guys. Just because some people will look at it like that doesn't mean we should hide it in shame.

What about all the guys with foot and under arm fetishes? should I stop going barefoot and wearing sleeveless shirts because of them?

Just so you know, it's 39 years since the first naked breast appeared in a UK daily national newspaper. There are a number of papers that include a daily topless picture. That is longer than I've been alive.

Given that they still haven't diminished in appeal after that level of exposure I think your "not special" argument is pretty much undermined.

The dark side of your reasoning is that by refusing to acknowledge the breast you create a stigma. You have young girls hitting the awkward and confusing time of puberty thinking that the changes their bodies are undergoing are somehow wrong or dirty.
