Yeesh. Swell idea in the meeting. Distasteful idea in execution, maybe. Not to seem jaded, but Facebook lives and dies by rights of pageviews, click-throughs, etc, and for them to launch this feature just seems more than a bit creepy and presumptive, no matter how politely they try and write the copy.

Maybe I'm just being over-sensitive about it -- I have dealt with a couple of deaths recently, but:

No thank you.

I'll go on ahead believing I'll outlive Facebook, and whatever they come up with next.

I think it's a very nice thing to do for someone. I have a few facebook friends who have passed away, and I'm hoping their family does memorialize them. It's not for everyone, but then, neither is a gravestone in a cemetery.

Yeah it is a little odd... might keep lazy people from going to the viewing or visiting their grave if all they have to do is log in and drop a comment.

Not necessarily lazy people. Some of us have families in other countries.
My sister passed away yesterday and family from all over the world have posted memories and sweet words on her facebook wall. I never thought I would do so, but even I posted something on her wall.

Jezus...I guess life can get pretty rough sometimes, but the roughest part by far is when you lose someone so close to you.
I wanted to comment on the article here, but I forgot what it was that I was going to say, and I'm sure it wasn't important.
Chez, I wish you a lot of strength.

I think the attraction for me is the idea that they won't keep showing up in the "suggestion" box, and I'm hoping that they take it further and make sure that they no longer show up in the advertisements for apps as well. I have a friend who passed on in August and it is very hard to keep seeing her picture appear on the sidebar or up above asking me to "Join XXX's Mafia" or "Play Poker with XXX Now". Her birthday is coming up and I know I'll get some sort of ad telling me to "send" her a gift. Boy, do I wish that I actually could...

Memorials are for the living. Whatever people have to do to get through the day works for me.

I love how it says
unrelated inquiries through this form may not receive a response.
because they've probably gotten messages from people looking for help to resize their profile picture.

Honestly, this seems like it will be used for pranks more than anything else.

See what I really need is a service to delete all traces of me online as soon as I'm gone including all my plime posts and anything I have ever said or done online. Not really interested in people creeping me on the internet, plus if God checks out my friend pages who knows what he will find out.

One guy I know, distant in law, memorialized the death of his brother by sending everyone his own nude pick on facebook. For his bad luck one of them was under aged girl, so now he is in prison, his car is demolished (unusual, but this really was part of the penalty) and for life he will have the mark of the sex offender. When someone dies, especially close relative, people seem to do strange things sometimes that they regret later.
